Flashback December: Christmas is Coming
Dec. 11th, 2019 10:22 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
For this month I'm featuring some older works newcomers haven't seen and others might not remember. I'd love to see others share their past work; there's nothing wrong with celebrating earlier creations any more than there is re-reading a favourite book or re-watching a film!
This week I'm featuring a WRE ficlet with El's take on decorating.
"Where did all this come from?" Romaine stared at the myriad cardboard and plastic boxes filling the living room. He'd helped El move house twice now and never seen any of these items.
"I store it at my parent's house. They said now I have a proper house and not a small rental I have to keep it though." El rolled her eyes at the imposition.
Romaine pointed out two boxes. "Those are both artificial trees."
"Yes. And that's a mini one in the box there."
"You said you wanted to buy a real potted tree to put outside."
El nodded. "Four trees. Don't judge me. I warned you I like decorating for Yuletide."
"It's the fifteenth of November!"

It’s NaNoWriMo and if you’re participating, good luck! For this month I’m posting snippets of things I’ve worked on during previous NaNoWriMos.
I did rebel NaNoWriMo in 2016 and wrote original fiction and fanfic, counting all the words towards my overall goal.
This snippet is from an original piece I’ve got some notes for but haven’t written much of the story. This conversation is between a woman with healing abilities who accidentally healed a man who now finds himself unable to be the disability advocate he’d become.

“Fancy a walk?” Romaine asked.
El nodded. “Want me to walk the wolf?”
“Would you? Thanks.”
Romaine went upstairs to get ready, El saying she needed to use the toilet, tie up her hair, and find a coat.
A few minutes later she came to meet him, pushing the door which he’d left ajar open. She was wearing a grey hoodie with little ear sewn onto the hood and the slogan “I am a cat” across the front. Romaine, now in wolf form, snorted at the hiding in plan sight pun and then used his nose to nudge the collar and lead he’d found from a bottom drawer and put on the coffee table.
El put the collar on and the slip lead, a green and white striped hoped cord with a leather stopper which she didn’t bother to adjust since he wouldn’t be pulling at her, and a large loop at the other end for her to hold.
“Keys?” she asked. Romaine whined, having forgot about that and gestured to the key box.
El picked up his keys and slid them into her pocket alongside her own, clipped to a loop on her jeans. She pulled the door behind them and locked up. On the way out, they met Mrs Cavanaugh.
“Oh hello,” Mrs Cavanaugh said.”This must be that beautiful dog. Can I pet him?”

WiP: Sorceress Apprentice
“Sir,” the mayor said, approaching Emeri. “Would you do us the honour?”
“It would be my pleasure,” Emeri said. “If Bryony wishes.”
"Me?" Bryony felt the world spin, grasped for stability using every trick she'd learnt these past weeks. She and Emeri, dance the fire dance? This was something she'd dreamt of, of being the Festival's Queen, of dancing with The Sorcerer, of being The Sorcerer's Queen.
It was too much. A dream wasn't supposed to be real. What if wasn't like her fantasies, what if she trod in the fire, she wasn't that great a dancer, what if she embarrassed herself, what if she embarrassed Emeri, what if –
"Who else?" Emeri asked, his hand still outstretched.
She swallowed, placed her hand in his. He gave her a warm smile as he closed his fingers over hers. He understood how much it meant to her.
They made their way to the ritual fire and there was a smattering of applause and then silence as they took their places.

Fic Snippet: Comfort
Jun. 19th, 2019 10:00 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
For this week's #writingwednesday here's a fic snippet looking at the developing relationship between Bryony and Emeri in the WiP: Sorceress Apprentice.

Emeri knocked on the bedroom door, though it was open. Bryony turned to face him.
"When you've finished with that book," he said, "I thought you might like to read this one, The Prince and Princess of Pandark." He proffered a green leather book with gilt-edged pages. "One of my favourites. I warn you the first chapter is very slow. You can skim through it without missing much plot though, and the second chapter is where the action begins and doesn't let up. I think you'll find the ending very satisfying."
She took the book. "Thank you."
On impulse she leaned up and kissed his cheek. He gave her a look she couldn't immediately interpret. She wished she were better at reading people, or that Emeri were easier to read.
"Was that wrong?" she asked when he didn't move or speak.
He shook his head. "No." He paused before he added, "Only unexpected."
She placed the book on the bed to free up her hands, so that she could take his hand in hers. "We touch often," she said, and her brain raced ahead, trying to make sense of things that were only making themselves apparent now. Every hug, every hand-holding, every caress had been for comfort. "But only when we're hurting."
When he was hurting. When she'd held him while he wept, for example
"I don't want that. I want us to be happy, whenever we can be, and I don't think being happy should make us less – "
Damn, damn, what words did she need? She read voraciously, that was where she'd learnt the word voraciously, she knew hundreds or thousands of words. Yet so often when she opened her mouth it was as if she was five years old again, reduced to babbling trite phrases and lacking the vocabulary to fully express herself.
Emeri was still waiting for her to finish her thought.

One evening at the call centre, El asks to see Romaine's Wolf form and reciprocates by shifting into her Cat form.
All about WiP WRE https://lmdee-writer.weebly.com/wre-wip-overview.html
Romaine hit the AWAY FROM DESK button and went off to the changing room - the double entendre was not lost on him.
He stripped off his clothes and closed his eyes. He took a deep breath, held it for a count of three, let it out slowly, allowing the Wolf to take over.
The change was smooth enough, one knee creaking a bit, and he was sure his shoulders would benefit from this shift after he'd been sat at the desk so much this week. The twinge from the shrapnel was unmistakable but he didn't grit his teeth. That only ever caused blood. He didn't want to show El his wolf-form with blood dripping from his teeth like some fairytale predator.
He padded out into the hall and into the office. El had fetched the drinks and was sipping coffee. Her eyes widened and she put the mug down.
"Oh, Rommie. You're gorgeous." She moved to crouch down and stare into his eyes. "May I?" She gestured with one hand.

Fic Snippets
Feb. 27th, 2019 01:02 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
For the final writing Wednesday of February, I’m sharing snippets from my WiPs. I searched for those mentioning ‘spring’ as we approach springtime in the northern hemisphere.
Sorceress Apprentice (fantasy romance)
The only way this could be more perfect was if Kerine and Sabrina were here to enjoy it with them. And, of course, if Emeri were not sick. It was hard to believe he was dying on a night like tonight when he was happy and so very much alive.
The moon rose, and the Elder led the ritual by the fire. Thanks were given for the summer, for the harvest, for all the blessings in their lives. Regrets were expressed, sorrow for losses endured and apologies for wrongs done to each other. Wishes were made for the future, hope that the coming winter be not too harsh and that spring would return soon.
Bryony blinked away tears. There would be no Winter Solstice dance to honour the returning sun, not for her and Emeri. She would be expressing grief for her loss when the winter sun fell upon the village square and the ritual fire was kindled once more.
“And now,” the Elder said, “The Ritual Fire Dance!”
WRE (shapeshifters)
It was a warm spring evening and Romaine had decided to go to work in his wolf form.
The good thing about night shifts was that there were less people around. Romaine trotted happily down the street without seeing a single person and only one car. He turned right, into the park, ducked through some bushes, and found the old abandoned rail line. It would take him longer to get to work, but sometimes it was good to let go.
He gave in to the urge to run, powerful muscles giving him speed most dogs or wolves wouldn’t muster. Crickets chirped from their perches in the overgrowth, and mice scuttled about in the bushes. A bird trilled, maybe a nightingale. His ears heard the sound perfectly but Romaine was no expert on birdsong.
Halfway, he paused at a puddle. Wolves could drink rainwater without ill effects, much as dogs could. By their dual nature they had immunity to a whole range of illnesses and toxins that could endanger or kill either dogs, or humans, or both. Still, sometimes the human mind shied away from the wolf instincts, always a disconcerting experience. He didn’t like to think of himself as two people; he was a Wolf, always, regardless of the form he was currently in.
Thanks for reading! Maybe you’d like to search for ‘spring’ in your WiPs and post the results?

Ficlet: A Foolish Fantasy
Jul. 11th, 2018 08:16 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)

A ficlet taking place in the Sorceress Apprentice world. Pre-canon, a young Bryony watches Emeri at the annual Summer Dance and indulges in a foolish fantasy of being his dance partner.
The Summer Dance, held at the solstice, was one of the most important festivals for the village and the ritual fire dance was the highlight of the celebration.
Bryony watched as Emeri held out his hand to his sister, Sabrina, to join him for the dance. They were so elegant and refined. Emeri was rarely the tallest man in any gathering but he had an undeniable presence, and Sabrina, almost as tall as her brother, drew many an admiring glance.
Logically his dance partner had to be Sabrina, another clan member. Traditionally the dancers were of equal status, and intimates of some sort. Emeri had no wife to dance with and there was no-one else present who was even close to his social rank.
Despite this, Bryony chewed at her lower lip as the music began, longing to be the one to dance. To be partnered with the sorcerer himself. It was a foolish fantasy, childish when she was almost a woman now, but she couldn't help herself from imagining being in Sabrina's place.
Kerine clapped along with the music and Bryony joined in with her sister, their mother beaming and fanning herself against the heat of the flames. Bryony had once mentioned her attraction to Emeri and her mother had scoffed. Kerine had gently reminded her that whatever all those love stories Bryony read showed, it didn't mean that life worked that way.
Of course Kerine was right. Besides her lowly status, Bryony was almost ten years younger than Emeri, and while her skill with a needle was something she could be proud of, her education was lacking. What could a non-magical girl offer such a man as the village sorcerer?
After the dance had finished to thunderous applause, Sabrina linked her arm with Emeri's and they wandered around, talking to the villagers. Bryony curtsied, heart in her mouth, when Sabrina stopped in front of her.
"What a beautiful dress," Sabrina said, running her gaze over the emerald green silk. Bryony had purchased it cheap because of some damage to the fabric, carefully cutting and stitching a dress from the best of the material and covering the rest of the marks with elegant embroidery, the highlight being details picked out in metallic threads that caught the firelight as she moved.
"Thank you, my lady," Bryony said, adding, "I made it myself."
"It is exquisite," Sabrina said and Emeri gave a smile.
"The stitching is remarkable," he agreed. "It is truly beautiful."
They'd moved off then to talk with the blacksmith, little knowing the effect of their words. The warmth in a giddy Bryony's cheeks was not merely due to her proximity to the fire.
Bryony went to bed that right reliving every moment of the dance, skirting the flames across from her partner, the music's tempo increasing and her steps more frantic until at the climax of the dance she was in Emeri's arms and the villagers cheered them on.
Ficlet: Innocence
Jun. 20th, 2018 08:49 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
"He knows this gentle courtship might be all they'll ever have"
The writer's block persists so I will share an older ficlet, never before posted here.
Nikolai is a vampire (or close enough) and Cecilia the mortal he has his eye on, though he wonders if he should or will make her a vampire too.
Pre-canon for a longer work I've put aside for some years now, in which Nikolai and his bride have spent years together and face new challenges in the modern world.
Originally for the writerverse prompt "write a fic that ends with the line In that moment, it's enough"

She is so very young – perhaps not so much by mortal standards, but certainly by his. Innocent, definitely. Not a beauty to most eyes, but he finds her attractive. Besides it's not just the physical that Nikolai is drawn to and it never has been.
She no longer thinks of him as a demon, though he's not yet told her exactly what he is. He has told her stories though, folklore and mythology, priming her in case he should want to reveal more of his nature.
He's had mortal companions, most long gone by now, and friendships with others like him. He's never made another like himself, never Changed anyone. He's thought about it, thought that if he did, he wouldn't be alone.
If he chose to, he could make this Cecilia like him. Yet deep down he knows that wouldn't guarantee she'd stay with him. Nor would he do it without her consent, and she's not ready to give him permission. She couldn't yet understand what she'd be consenting to.
If he's honest, he's not ready to explain. Part of him fears she'll turn on him if he tells her the whole truth of what he is. Part of him savours her innocence- he wants to enjoy those moments with her, to see the world through her eyes for a little longer.
He kneels at her feet, the same as he does almost every day now, while she embroiders, and begins another tale. She listens, a smile on her face, and it warms his heart to see her enjoyment.
He knows this gentle courtship might be all they'll ever have. In that moment, it's enough.

The
one_sentence_only community has a number of prompt tables with the challenge to fill all the prompts with a single sentence. Here are five more fills from the fluff/romance table, written for my WiP novel Sorceress Apprentice.
Secret
“There were few secrets between us,” Emeri said, and Bryony again thought of how his closeness to his sister mirrored her bond with Kerine, and the agony of the separation he’d endured for so long that far outweighed the few weeks she would be parted from her sister.
Music
Bryony loved to listen to Emeri play the lyre, and she appreciated how it could be a distraction for him from his melancholy, losing himself in the notes and only as the tune finished remembering where he was or even that she was here with him and he was no longer alone.
Gift
“I know you don’t like it when I give you expensive things,” Emeri said hesitantly, gesturing to the family heirloom he had loaned her and recalling how Bryony had once accused him of trying to pay her for her affection which was freely given, “but I would dearly love for you to keep this necklace for it suits you, and I can think of no-one I would rather give it to.”
Roses
Bryony knew roses were often given as love tokens, adored their sweet scent and varied colours, but now she learnt of their many uses in magical workings and practical applications, rose hips, rose buds, and petals all having numerous purposes.
Whirlpool
Bryony dreamt of water, a rushing river, a whirlpool, the sea; her element was air and yet it seemed Emeri was right that water too called to her and that she might be a weather witch, a storm sorceress.

Happiness
Bryony stared up at the cloudless sky; she was full of food and wine, the sun was warm and the breeze gentle, the blanket was soft beneath her and Emeri was asleep alongside her, and she was happy.
Dancing
It was her childhood dream, long put aside, but now she was to dance the ritual dance with the sorcerer himself in front of the whole village, and Bryony was overwhelmed at the chance, yet afraid she might embarrass herself or, worse, Emeri.
Hyper
She was too anxious, too excited, too overwrought to sleep, for the magic was still humming in her blood.
Candles
She used a match to light the candles on the dining table for fire magic was not her element, and with her inexperience she thought she could do something terrible like set the tablecloth ablaze if she attempted to light them with a spell.
First Kiss
He gave her a look of longing and impulsively Bryony leaned in before she could doubt herself and pressed her lips to his.

She was too anxious, too excited, too overwrought to sleep, for the magic was still humming in her blood.

Sorceress Apprentice Excerpts

There are a lot of posts, articles, and prompts asking about themes and characters in you WiPs. For my WiP Sorceress Apprentice there are a number of themes and motifs. One of the important features of the novel is sibling bonds, both between protagonist Bryony and her sister, Kerine, and Emeri and his sister, Sabrina. While the romance between Bryony and Emeri is at the heart of the novel, the sibling bonds are a vital part of the book.
I find that in too many books and TV shows the sibling bonds are often tossed aside in favour of, or overshadowed by, the protagonist's sexual partner. I didn't want that to be the case here. Here are some excerpts illustrating the depth of the sibling bonds in SA – please remember that this a WiP so there'll be further editing in the future.
